About Us

Norwegian immigrant C.F. Johnsen founded Valley Machine Works (VMW) in 1909 at 701 W. Jackson  St., Phoenix, Arizona. It was located in a building that previously operated as the "Olson and Martini  Saloon". Over the years, VMW became a historic family-owned business providing  specialized industrial repair, precision machining, welding, and  fabrication. During the Johnsen era, the company was operated by four generations of the Johnsen family. 

Larry  Johnsen sold the business to the Shane Williams family, and son, Tyler, in 2019. After 110 years at the original location, the company moved into a 24,000-square-foot facility at 1138 W. Watkins St., Phoenix, AZ to continue operations. To this day, Valley Machine Works, Inc. is still a multi-generational family owned and operated business that maintains its historic legacy of excellent service.

When C.F. Johnsen first opened the shop, it was powered by one 5-horsepower motor. Today, the shop is equipped with a variety of precision machines including state-of-the-art CNC equipped mills and lathes. VMW also has a full-service welding and fabrication shop on the premises capable of building or repairing almost anything and with a large selection of materials on hand most jobs can begin right away.

Specializing in part fabrication and repairs for vertical transportation systems like elevator cars, escalators, hoisting equipment and lifts as well as servicing the HVAC industry and the aviation, agriculture, and the construction sectors. VMW can repair or rebuild gear boxes, fabricate blower shafts, shafts with keyways for sprockets or fans, repair pumps or impellers, and a wide range of other services.
